Mic Locker
The Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences has been developing its microphone collection for most of the past 25 years, so it should come as no surprise that we now have a vast array of over 200 mics, representing 20 different brand names. The collection ranges from the venerable industry standard Shure SM-57 (which costs about $90) to the exotic and incomparable Blue Bottle (which costs about $5000.) The Conservatory is one of two organizations in the world that own 4 Blue Bottles. The other is Air Studios in London, founded by legendary Beatles producer Sir George Martin, one of the finest recording facilities on the planet.
Our collection features every modern microphone topology currently in use, including condensers (large and small diaphragm,) dynamics, and ribbon mics. We have monophonic, stereo, single-pattern, multi-pattern, and even tube microphones. The point here is that our students are trained on every conceivable type of mic available. The mics are used not only by instructors during class hours, but also by students after-hours for final projects. We get into great detail on how mics work, both electrically and acoustically, delving into a multitude of techniques for perfectly capturing recordings. The microphone is the very beginning of the recording process, and if things aren’t done correctly there, nothing can be done to “fix” the sound later in the process. This is why we devote such a huge amount of time and effort to making sure our graduates know how to get it exactly right.
Take a look at the listing of microphones we have. We’re quite certain you’ll be very impressed. We’re proud—what can we say?
